More charcoal sketching

I subscribe to the RSS feed of one of my class mates and her post reminded me that I have yet to put one up myself for this week - so here goes.

I suspect that this week I was spending far too much time analysing what I was doing. In my somewhat limited experience, I find that if I focus on what I am doing rather than on what I am seeing then my pictures don’t work as well.

This week we only drew for one of our two weekly drawing classes. We were asked to block in the shape of the model using the charcoal. The lines running down the picture are caused by the grain of the easel I was using. Strangely I find the effect quite interesting and while it was not intended, I don’t mind it.

Later in the week as we all looked at the drawings that we had produced in the short time that we’ve been doing this subject I was struck again by the thought that I can no longer say that I can’t draw. Oh, not well, it’s true, but you have to start somewhere. I fancied briefly that I might have a talent for drawing. All these wonderful friends and family stroking my ego, that for a short space of time, I wanted to believe.

nude torso blocked in charcoal

This charcoal of a torso is the result of a two or maybe ten minute sketch. Time whizzes past on many booted feet when we draw.

To view this weblog the way that I imagined it - you will need to download the script font Jeana. Here is the link to the True Type font with instructions for download and PC installation. I believe that Mac OSX users are also able to use this file.
