Who would have thought that drawing was such hard work! So we got stuck into scratching charcoal onto newsprint yesterday. For the purpose of this exercise I’m going to try to keep a positive attitude.

Well then, let’s just say that as a newbie, I can unequivocally say that life drawing is really interesting, challenging and so far my hands and face wear as much charcoal as my paper. I think it is also safe to say that I probably have more potential as a photographer than as an artist.

That takes nothing away from the fun and anticipation. One of my lecturers said that doing this class would help me develop my drawing skills. I don’t know, much of what is said means nothing to me, I can’t visualise this 3 dimensional world we are expected to capture.

I never know where to start and it embarrasses me, no the truth is I’m terrified when my drawings fall far far far short of my expectations. These are of course things that I have to deal with and learning is after all why I attend class. To deal with the second point I shall continue to publish a picture or two from each class.

Jenny - seated

I’ve uploaded three pictures - the first two are from the first class on Monday and the last is from today. It’s really odd but after the first class I felt really good and positive, but after the first half hour today I was convinced that I had used up my complete quota of talent on the first day.

Jenny - lying on her side

A few hours have passed since class finished and I’ve looked at my output (frankly it doesn’t get any better for the looking.) I’ve stopped being as defeatist and really they could be worse (couldn’t they?- some positive affirmation is required here). I’m hoping that I’m just a slow learner and that I’ll improve over the next 7 weeks. Our lecturer Michele works very hard at putting a positive spin on her comments and I must admit that I cling to any hint of praise - no matter how faint it is.

Are my insecurities showing? You bet. Despite everything I’ve said - I like my pictures. Thanks to our wonderful life model Jenny.

Logging off,
Jools
